Arthur Walter Backus, age 77, passed away June 5, 2015, in St. George, Utah, from complications of open heart surgery. He was born August 21, 1937, and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas.
At a young age he joined the U.S. Army and was very proud of his military service. He married Norma Lee Curtis in August 1956 and they later divorced.
He was a man who was self-taught and exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit. Arthur loved to travel and enjoyed traveling around the world. He was a private pilot, and at one time owned an airplane.
He began repairing and supplying typewriter ribbons which evolved into starting his own business, Backus Office Supply, Inc. which he ran until the year 2000 when he closed the business. He came to St. George in 1990 on a part-time basis, and eventually became a permanent resident of Sun River in St. George where he enjoyed the last few years of his retirement.
He was a member of the LDS Church.
Arthur enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Arthur Sherman Backus.
He is survived by his companion Sarah Glidden of St. George, Utah; daughters, Diane Miranti of Greenwood, Missouri, and Patricia (Percy) Vollmer of Abbeville, Louisiana; son, Jeffery Walter (Roxann) of Layton, Utah, Anthony of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother, William (Mary) Backus of Syracuse, Utah; sister, Sue Hays of LaVerne, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services
- Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 10, at 3 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George.
- A viewing will be held Wednesday, from 1-2:45 p.m., prior to services.
- A military graveside ceremony will take place Thursday, June 11, at 1 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial State Park, 17111 Camp Williams Rd, Bluffdale.
