Our loving mother Kathryn Bringhurst Stout Cornelius passed from this mortal world on June 29, 2022, at the age of 92.
She was born on Jan. 29, 1930, in Kanab, Utah, to Archie and LaVerna Bringhurst. Her twin sister was stillborn. She was the third of six children. Kathryn left this world shortly after being diagnosed with abdominal cancer. She grew up on her parents’ farm on La Verkin Creek where she enjoyed working in the family’s strawberry field and helping her mother bottle fruit from their many fruit trees.
Kathryn graduated from Hurricane High School where she was Homecoming queen and head cheerleader. She met both loves of her life while in school. She married Hal Morrill Stout Feb. 14, 1947. They had five children, all boys: Larry (Lisa) Stout, Kevin (Barbara) Stout, twins Kelly (Julie) Stout and Collin (Jarolyn) Stout and Lamarr Stout. They enjoyed a great life that ended way too soon, when Hal passed away while they were living in Ely, Nevada.
Hal, Kathryn and Kenneth Cornelius had all been close friends while in high school. After Hal passed, Kenneth stepped up and helped Kathryn with her boys. They went to Kathryn’s mother and asked her if she thought it would be OK if they got married. She said that it sounded like a great idea to her. Kenneth and Kathryn were married on Dec. 21, 1963. They lived in Hurricane, Utah, until they moved to Virgin, Utah, to enjoy life on the farm/ranch.
Kathryn and Kenneth had two more children, Kenneth (Tina) Cornelius and Carolyn (Chuck) Matsler. Kathryn had a very full life and worked hard making a happy and loving home for all of her children. She was a talented piano player, an amateur artist and she loved to quilt and crochet.
Kathryn was an excellent cook and made wonderful meals for all. The family especially loved her traditional Christmas breakfast with her famous Christmas muffins. She also canned fruits and vegetables from her garden and orchard and taught her family to continue the tradition.
She was a very devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed teaching the gospel, serving as gospel doctrine teacher, in the Relief Society presidency and in Primary. She enjoyed traveling, spending time at the family cabin on Kolob and visiting Lake Powell.
Kathryn loved being surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren. The grandchildren enjoyed life at Grandma’s house, which included eating ice cream, cookies, candy and Cheetos, although she warned them to not eat all of Larry’s Cheetos. Grandchildren spent many days playing in the pond and fishing. She loved hearing their stories about the one that got away. She will be greatly missed by everyone that had the opportunity to enjoy her company.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her twin sister Carolyn Bringhurst, parents Archie and LaVerna Bringhurst, husbands Hal Morrill Stout and Kenneth Cornelius, son Kelly Allen Stout, sisters Martha Jane Lemmons, Geraldine Thompson, Viona Marie Wilson and Dolle Dado.
She is survived by brother Bud (Vina) Bringhurst, brother-in-law Dale Wilson, her six remaining children, 31 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Thanks to Enhabit Hospice, especially nurse Natalee. A special thanks to Shelley Bullock for her loving care and attention to Grandma.
