Wendy Robyn Dennis-Patten

Patten, Wendy obit(July 17, 1970 – June 29, 2015)

Wendy Robyn Dennis-Patten passed away on June 29, 2015, due to natural causes. Wendy was born as the first child to Donald and Jeanne Dennis on July 17, 1970, and was followed by her three loving brothers Robert, Paul, and Adam Dennis who adored their older sister.

Wendy was born in Cedar City, Utah, and moved to Springdale, Utah, at a young age. She attended Springdale Elementary and Hurricane High School, graduating in 1988, she gained many lifelong friends.

Married to Steve Harris in 1989, they welcomed their daughter Audry Harris in 1995 and then granddaughter Kadync Ewell in 2012 whom she loved and adored very much. In 2013, she married her loving husband Jimmy Patten and gained Brian and Dawn Patten, Rob and Leslie Patten, and Jeff Patten as step-children and five step-grandchildren, Brian Jr., Brianna, Taylor, Asher and Olivia.

Wendy worked at the Spotted Dog in Springdale, Utah from the age of 13 for over 30 years. Wendy loved the outdoors, playing gold, and watching sports on her free time. Wendy’s contagious giggle will be missed dearly.

Funeral Services

  • A celebration of Wendy’s life will be July 17, 7 p.m. at The Bit & Spur in Springdale, Utah.

Leonard George Norman

Norman, Leonard Obit(August 14, 1930 – June 29, 2015)

Leonard George Norman, passed quickly after a short illness on June 29, 2015, at the age of 84 years. He was born August 14, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to George Herbert and Iris Ranck Norman.

He was married for 52 years to the love of his life and soul mate Allene “Ann” Cahoon on July 5, 1958, which was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on May 12, 1965.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, wife Ann, and his brother Glenn and sisters Marjorie and Patricia. Leonard is survived by his daughter Heidi (Rhett) Larsen, son David (Cynthia), son Michael, grandchildren Chalane Collett, Luke Behunin, Cassi Norman and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Leonard (called little deer slayer) loved hunting with his dad, brother (big deer slayer) and later in his life with his two sons, and continued to do this until he was 83 years old. He very proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1950-1954. He attended the University of Utah for 3.5 years, but later became an avid BYU fan.

Leonard served in many positions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including a stake mission, high council and an extended time of three terms as bishop of the Milcreek 5th ward.

Leonard’s first employment was at the Metropolitan Laundry at the young age of 16 as an errand boy and advanced to office manager. It was here that he met his wife Ann. After almost 20 years at the laundry, he changed his employment and went to work at Western Mortgage Co., and after 30 years retired as the construction loan officer.

Upon retirement, Leonard and his wife split their time between their two residences at Manilla, Utah, and St. George, Utah. Leonard enjoyed taking his family and friends fishing and boating when they visited them at Flaming Gorge. When their time was in St. George, they enjoyed Friday night dinner dates and playing cards with friends.

After the passing of his wife, he moved back to the Salt Lake area to be closer to his family. He enjoyed going to school functions, recitals, family dinners and anything his children and grandchildren would be involved in.

Funeral Services

  • A funeral will be Saturday, July 1, 1 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City.
  • A viewing will be Friday, July 10, 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, from 12-1 p.m. also at the memorial park.
  • Internment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Emily Joy Welch

Welch, Emily(May 31, 2015 – July 4, 2015)

Emily Joy Welch passed away July 4, 2015, in St. George, Utah. She gave her parents, Weston and Sarah Welch 35 wonderful days before she had to leave us.

She is survived by her parents and her sister, Alexis; grandparents, Julie and Gary Korstick and Joy and Ralph Clarke; and her uncle, David Korstick. She was preceded in death by her brother, Brayden.

Funeral Services

  • A visitation will be held Saturday, July 11, from 9-11 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George.
  • All are invited to come and leave their condolences.

Rosa Maria Taylor-Glass

Glass, Rosa(March 12, 1938 – July 2, 2015)

On Thursday, July 2, 2015, Rosa Maria Taylor-Glass, age 77, passed away peacefully at the Willow Woods Care Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, after a long 8-year battle with dementia. She was born March 12, 1938, in Managua, Nicaragua, to Mercedes Martinez of Managua, Nicaragua, and James Taylor of Hampshire, Tennessee.

Rosa came to the U.S. at age 18 with no prior training in the English language to claim her U.S. citizenship. Strong courage and faith carried Rosa through many personal trials and hardships. She became a member of the LDS Church on August 10, 1974, which teachings she embraced for the rest of her life. She was kind, funny, faithful, giving and compassionate to all people.

She lived in California, Arizona, and finally settled in the St. George area. She worked for St. Joseph’s Hospital and cared for the elderly in her home. She loved to travel with her husband, Donald Glass, and loved to visit her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and siblings.

Rosa is preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Donald Glass; her sister, Marvelly and her brothers, Vernon and Loving Taylor.

She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Maria Taylor-Barney; son-in-law, Del K. Barney; granddaughters, Crystal Mena Barney, Kimberly Carma Barney-Lewis, Chelsea Barney; grandson, Joseph Jasper Barney, all of Heber City, Utah; great-grandchildren, Francis Trae Lewis, Trystan Dee Lewis and Harper Rose Becker; niece, Rosemary Williams and several other nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Willow Woods Care Center and Susan and Emily of Hospice Care for providing her with kind and compassionate care. The family extends an invitation to all those who knew Rosa to attend the graveside service.

Funeral Services

  • A graveside service will be held in Rosa’s honor Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m. at the Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Drive, St. George.

Kathryn Lau Tanner

Tanner, Kathryn O(April 11, 1923 – July 9, 2015)

Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Kathryn (Kathie) Lau Tanner passed away in her St. George, Utah, home on July 9, 2015.  Kathie was born April 11, 1923, in the quiet town of Soda Springs, Idaho, to Emma Bienz Lau and Hyrum Moroni Lau.  She is survived by her husband Stanley Robert Tanner and her children Marshall (Colleen), Scott (Sydney), Steve (Gayle), Susan (David), Maryanne (Steve), and Barbara.  She has 27 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren.

Kathie met her sweetheart, Bob, in the fall of 1941 at a church meeting, where he recalls her as “a very beautiful brunette.”  They began their courtship and were eventually married on March 17, 1945.  They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by friends and family.

Kathie had a beautiful singing voice and sang in a trio as a young single adult.  She and Bob had the opportunity to perform in a choir together at the Hollywood Bowl. She sang in ward choirs throughout her life and passed on her love of music to her children.  We will be forever grateful for the memories of singing Christmas carols at our family Christmas parties.

Kathie was the student body vice president of Soda Springs High School and graduated as valedictorian of her class.  She was a wonderful writer and penned many beautiful poems, some of which were published.  Kathie was also a skilled cook and created many family traditions with her delicious recipes.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kathie served as ward relief society president (twice), stake relief society president, instructor for relief society and young women, youth dance instructor, ward chorister, temple worker and supervisor in the Los Angeles Temple, and senior missionary with her husband in the California Los Angeles Mission.  Her strong testimony and willingness to serve has enriched our family and taught us the meaning of faith, obedience, sacrifice, and love.

Kathie was beloved by all who knew her because of her generous heart and boundless love.  She was a devoted wife, loving mother and doting grandmother who cared deeply for the people in her life.  Her legacy of love, service, and faith in God blessed her family and all who knew her.  She will be greatly missed and held in honored remembrance.

  • Funeral services will be Saturday, July 18, 11 a.m. at the Westridge LDS Chapel, 415 N. Westridge Drive, St. George.
  • A viewing will be Friday, July 17 from 6-7 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George, and prior to services Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the chapel.

Clair Steele Reese

Reese, Clair obit(July 8, 1937 – July 18, 2015)

Clair Steele Reese was born July 8, 1937 in Logan, Utah, to Charles Lionel Reese and Georgia Ruth Foster. He left this earth on eagle’s wings July 18, 2015. At one time, he felt like the Phoenix bird and would fly out of the ashes. But it was not to be.

He was taught well by his parents and siblings to live a life of honesty, integrity and morality. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife, Carol, served a companions on a church mission in the Addiction Recovery Program. They were currently serving together as temple ordinance workers in the St. George Temple.

He had many other callings in the church that he truly enjoyed, including being in the branch presidency, high priest group leader and teacher and many other callings to serve. He was a dedicated gospel doctrine teacher and home teacher. He dearly loved the gospel and read and studied it continually.

He was born and raised on a farm where he learned the value of hard work, persistence and love for those he worked for.

He started his own business CSR Investigations and worked with his partner, Dennis, for several years. His favorite activities other than golf were playing his trumpet and playing the piano in priesthood.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; son, Michael; daughters, Pati and Peggy; stepson, Phillip; and his precious grandchildren, Davin, Miguel, Naomi, Nicolas and Toni, whom he was recently able to visit and enjoy. He is also survived by his younger brother, Cleve.

We all love him so much and will miss him dearly.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 25, noon at the Sun River LDS 1st Branch, 4461 S. Country Club Drive, Sun River.
  • There will be a viewing Friday, 6-7 p.m. at the church, and also Saturday, 10:30-11:30 a.m., prior to services at the chapel.
  • Interment will take place in the Tonaquint Cemetery.

Russell Rulon Foster

Foster, Russel O obit(1934 – July 21, 2015)

Russell Rulon Foster, 81, of St George, Utah, passed away on July 21, 2015, after a courageous fight with a brain tumor.

Russ was born in Easley, South Carolina, to Wilda Truman and Corbett Foster. He spent most of his youth in Easley, South Carolina, and Huntington, Utah. He spent 22 years in the Navy as a jet engine mechanic, retiring as a chief petty officer. He served in and is a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his time in the military he met and married his second wife, Patricia DeVor. As of his passing they had been married 53 years.

He earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from San Jose State University and worked for many years as a Vocational Arts teacher in San Jose, California. Russ loved cars. Many of his days where spent in the garage tinkering with his own cars and fixing those of family and friends.

Russ was a devout member of the LDS church. He served in many positions within the church, including stake high councilman, temple worker and service missionary at the St. George historical sites, LDS Employment Center and the regional family history center.

  • Funeral services will be Saturday, July 25, 2 p.m., at the Morningside LDS Chapel, 930 South Morningside Drive, St George.
  • A viewing will be Saturday, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., prior to services at the chapel.

Winnie VaLaine Bladen

Bladen, VaLaine Obit2(February 14, 1933 – July 20, 2015)

Winnie VaLaine Bladen, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away on July 20, 2015, in St. George, Utah, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on February 14, 1933, in Cedar City, Utah, to Preston Prince Williams and Lillian Wakeling Williams. She was educated in Cedar City, Utah and graduated from Cedar High in 1951.

VaLaine married her high school sweetheart Boyd George Bladen, June 4, 1952, in the St. George, Utah LDS Temple for time and all eternity. She was a devoted member of the LDS church and served in many leadership and teaching capacities including young women’s for 17 years, ward organist and a relief society teacher. VaLaine and her loving companion Boyd, served as ordinance workers in the St. George temple for eight years. She was also a PTA president at Cedar High School and in 1975 she made it possible for the graduating class to travel to California for their senior trip.

In her early marriage, VaLaine worked at Hunter Cowan hardware, JC Penney, Coleman and the “old” hospital. She loved to play the piano and organ, paint, cook, quilting and sewing. Her greatest contributions were as a loving, loyal and steady wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Everyone who knew her felt they were accepted and loved unconditionally.

VaLaine is survived by her husband Boyd, and their children, Kent (Nila) Bladen of Salt Lake City; Marie (Eric) Marchant of Provo; Lesa (Randy) Griffin of St. George; Neil (Sally) Bladen of St. George. Along with 22 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren who laughed, loved and adored their grandma. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Kenneth Preston Williams.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 25, 11 a.m. at the Morningside Stake Center, 879 S. River Road, St. George.
  • A viewing will be held Friday, July 24, 6-8 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff, St. George, and Saturday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the stake center.
  • Interment will be Saturday, 3 p.m. at the Cedar City Cemetery.

Betty Blake Sullivan

Sullivan, Betty O obit(July 5, 1934 – July 25, 2015)

Betty Blake Sullivan, 81, of St. George, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015.  She was born in St. George, on July 5, 1934. Betty attended school in St. George prior to her marriage to William Wesley Sullivan on February 24, 1954, in St. George, and then sealed in the St. George Temple. They were married for 60 years.

Betty enjoyed square dancing, cruising, trips in their motorhome and houseboat, all with her beloved “Wes.” She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed many church callings. Betty loved to entertain and decorate for the holidays. She was a great cook all while working daily in the family business.

Betty is survived by her four children, Kim Sullivan, Karla (Peter) Michelin, Kent (Sue Ellen) Sullivan and Kendall (Mitzi) Sullivan; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sisters, Wanda Lucas and Thelma Oswald; sisters-in-law, Darlene Blake, Diane Sullivan, Leila Sullivan; and brother-in-law, Carl Rodoni.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Friday, July 31, 11 a.m. at the St. James Chapel, 1095 St. James Lane, St. George.
  • Visitations will be held Thursday, July 39, from 6-8 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George, and Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at St. James Chapel.
  • Interment will take place in the St. George City Cemetery.

Bateman, Rann Dee Obit(January 13, 1984 – July 1, 2015)

Rann Dee Bateman, 31 years old, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015. He was born January 13, 1984, in Hildale, Utah, to Craig Bateman and Leona Pledger Bateman.

He loved to work out and was all about personal fitness and taking care of his body. Rann Dee always attracted the women and babies! He loved them both! He was a big socializer and loved people. He was known as the family joker and clean freak. We enjoyed his company very much. He took the family fishing and was always taking everyone hiking or anything outdoors. He was dearly loved and will be extremely missed.

He is survived by his children, Chris, Brackyn, Hunter and Kirstyn; parents, Craig and Leona Bateman; brothers, Jay Sun Bateman, Brad Lee Bateman, Camn Ron Bateman, Carl Lynn Bateman, Kenn Dell Bateman, Greg Ray Bateman, Fred Rick Bateman and Will Ace Bateman; sisters, Andrea Bateman, Janessa Bateman and Paris Bateman; maternal grandmother, Hannah Cooke Pledger.

  • A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 1, at 1 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George.

Cornell “Sweeney” Smith, age 49, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015. He was born to Fidel and Effie Smith in Schurz, Nevada.

Sweeney had a carefree, colorful life. He was a loving father, brother, uncle, son and grandfather.

He is survived by his mother, Effie Smith; children, Dorah, 20, Anthony, 18, Cornell Jr., 17, Derek, 15, Shannon, 28 and Boché, 24; grandchildren, Sophia, Isaiah and Dezeray; and siblings, Julie, Leon, Priscilla, JoAnn, Roberta, Pauline, Lori and Farrell.

He is preceded in death by his father, Fidel Smith, and grandmother, Flora Myers.

Ned Lyle Carter

Carter, Ned Obit(November 9, 1932 – July 27, 2015)

Ned Lyle Carter, age 82, passed away peacefully July 27, 2015, in Hurricane, Utah. He was born November 9, 1932, in Minersville, Utah, to Horace L. and Madge LeFever Carter. He was the twin brother to Ted and one of 12 children.

He is survived by a brother, Bill Carter (Ann) of St. George, Utah; a sister, Barbara Joy Granger of Lahara, California; six children, Nedra Carter of West Valley City, Utah, Michael Carter of Milford, Utah, Eddie Bond (Irma) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Penny Blair of Overton, Nevada and Kevin Carter (Nanette) of Caliente, Nevada; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; and many nephew and nieces. He is preceded in death by two children, Marcella Carter and Jimmy Carter.

Ned loved the outdoors and was considered a great hunter and fisherman. He always had a grand story to tell and was a cowboy of old. He wore it well, from his old stained Stetson cowboy hat down to the tip of his cowboy boots.

One thing about Ned is he loved to cook wherever he hung his hat. He had a touch for cooking all occasions of foods.

Besides the love for hunting and fishing, Ned loved his sports. He loved a good basketball game or tennis match. As a teenager, he was on the school basketball team.

He loved country music and Marty Robins, especially the song “A White Sports Coat and a Pink Carnation.”

The family wishes to acknowledge Sam Seymour and his staff at Heritage Senior Living for all their kindness and love that was shown Ned during the last eight years.

Edith Ann Bates Suggs

(October 12, 1931 – July 27, 2015)

Edith Ann Bates Suggs, formerly from Panama City, passed away July 27, 2015. She was born in Mound City, Missouri, October 12, 1931, to Fred Bates and Alberta Hoover Bates. She married Joel S. Suggs Jr., June 12, 1949, in Georgia.

She lived in Missouri until her mother’s death when she was only 12 and soon after moved with her father to Pensacola, Florida. She worked hard from the age of 15 and met her husband Joel (Buddy) Suggs while she worked at a Panama City Theater. She worked for some time at First Federal Savings Bank until Joel was hired to work for the Boeing Company and they moved to Fort Walton. They made many moves during their married life, but in addition to living in Florida, they lived in Utah and Washington for the majority of their lives. While in Washington, she worked for the Sears store as a department manager and retired when they moved back to Panama City in the 1990s.

She is survived by her daughter Judy Suggs Backus Pickett, son-in-law Harlow Pickett III of St. George, Utah, and four grandsons, Tony Backus of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jacob Suggs, Caleb Suggs, and Benjamin Suggs all of Ft. Collins, Colorado and daughter-in-law Cherrie Suggs, Ft. Collins, Colorado. Edith is also survived by one sister, Irene Shelby, Pensacola, Florida; and one brother Dale Gibson and sister-in-law Carol Gibson, Gold Hill, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel; son, David S. Suggs; her mother and father; two sisters, Dorothy Gibson and Mary Bates; and one brother, Harvey Bates.

During her illness, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter Judy, son-in-law Harlow, grandson Tony and Journey of Hope Hospice.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral will be held Tuesday, August 4, at 2 p.m. at the Southerland Family Funeral Home.
  • A viewing will be Tuesday, 1-2 p.m., prior to services at the funeral home.
  • Interment will take place Tuesday, 3 p.m., beside her sweetheart at the Evergreen Cemetery, 3722 Highway 231 North, Panama City, Florida.

Morgan H. Jessop born in Hildale, Utah, on November 17, 1966, passed away on July 26, 2015 in Minot, North Dakota. As Morgan once said, he is finally walking with the Lord.

He is survived by his parents Albert and Noreen Jessop, his five sisters and three brothers; Melvina (David Roundy), Betty (Paul Black), Nancy (David Black), Albert JR, Ron (Rachel Darger Jessop), Laurice (David Lane) Gertrude (Duane Robb), Jayson (Daughter Nika). He was also survived by his many nieces and nephews; Brandon, Kevin, Kyle, Eric, Bradley, Anthony, Leslyann, Kara, Rachie, Damian, Shelia, Nathaniel, Jessica, Devan, Michael Mellissa, Meagan, Gregory, Carl, Jared and Zachary and many more nieces and nephews.

He preceded in death by his older sister Deanna, his grandparents Joseph S and Annie Gertrude Jessop, Melvin and Ruth Johnson, his Aunt Deanna and Uncle Freddie Johnson, as well as his nephew Little Ron Jessop.

Morgan was a very hard working man, he loved using his hands to tear things down, build and rebuild again. He was a jack of all trades and master of none. One thing he did master and was well known for was concrete work. To friends he was known as “Captain Morgan” and to family he was known as “Uncle Mo-Mo or Muncle Organ”.

His life was devoted to God, his family, and his work. Morgan loved getting dressed up to go dancing and just having a good time. He thrived off of spending time with all of his nieces and nephews, showing off his dog, Bear, and telling a good story.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be Sunday, August 2, noon in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George.
  • A visitation will be Sunday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services at the mortuary.

Lionel John Bushey II

Bushey, Lionel O obit(May 17, 1947 – August 1, 2015)

On August 1, 2015, the Lord enclosed his good and faithful servant, Lionel J. Bushey, into His loving arms. Born May 17, 1947, in Menominee, Michigan, to the former Lionel J. and Esther M. (Jaeger) Bushey. Nick-named Lon as father was called Leon. On February 1, 1969, he married the former Barbara Rae Wozniak at Resurrection Catholic Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Lon attended parochial school through 1961, graduated West High School in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in 1965 and immediately joined the US Marine Corps. His first enlistment was four years, serving two tours in Vietnam and then transferring to the Marine Corps Reserves. After working for Wisconsin Bell Telephone for two and a half years, he returned to active duty Marine Corps in 1972, culminating his career in 1988-fourteen years enlisted and nine years commissioned (Chief Warrant Officer-3). Lon’s second career was in municipal government, managerial and executive positions, retiring as a city administrator in 2007.

During Lon’s military career, he and Barb made their homes in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Cincinnati, Ohio; Twenty-Nine Palms, California; Yuma, Arizona; and after military service, lived in Oconto Falls and Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and finally in 2007 settling in St. George, Utah. Together Lon and Barb raised three daughters; Jennifer Branscum, Wendy (Greg) Toole, and Ashleigh Bushey. Wendy and her husband Greg have given Lon and Barb four granddaughters, Katie, Madie, Abigail and Whitney.

Bushey, Lionel Y obitOldest of seven children, he is survived by his siblings and spouses; Elizabeth (Patrick) Culligan, Richard (Jean) Bushey, Roberta (Carlos) Alvarez, Daniel (Paula) Bushey, David (Liberty) Bushey, and Edward (Michele) Bushey. His brothers and sisters-in-law; Craig (Gail) Wozniak, Linda (Tom) Reimer, Bruce (Jean) Wozniak, Mary (Bob) Krueger, Mark (Tammy) Wozniak, Kim (Ken) Lardinois, Carrie (Matt) Voda. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Lon was involved in the Marine Corp League. He was an active member of St. George Catholic Church in St. George, Utah. His favorite past times in his retirement years were preparing for and teaching adult scripture study classes. He loved his Indian Motorcycle and cherished his bike rides with his brothers and friends.

Lon lived fully and fought the good fight, though his final years were fighting ailments resulting from the Vietnam War. He was a loving husband, and father; doting grandfather, and faithful and loyal friend.

  • Funeral mass will be Thursday, August 6, 10 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Oscar Martin Picos, at St. George Catholic Church, 157 North 200 West, St. George.
  • Viewing and greeting of the family will be Wednesday, August 5, 6-8 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George.
  • Rosary and prayer service will be Wednesday, 6 p.m. at the mortuary, ending with Marine Military color guard honors.

Jon Prince(February 19, 1985 – July 30, 2015)

Jonathan Lee Prince, 30, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015. He was born February 19, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clark Francis Prince and Wendy Lee Stolworthy Prince.

Jon lived in both Arizona and Utah most of his life. He resided in Logan, Utah, while attending Utah State University, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. His last residency was in Zion’s Mountain Ranch. He enjoyed it there where he was close to nature. Cooking was his passion.

He is survived by his mother, Wendy Prince (Hurricane, Utah); brother, Jason Prince (Hurricane, Utah); and sister, Jackie Pearson (South Jordan, Utah). He is preceded by his father, Clark Prince, and his brother, Mario DeNardo.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6, 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 320 N 3400 West, Hurricane.
  • A viewing will be Thursday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel.

Evans, Lucille obit(June 13, 1920 – August 3, 2015)

Lucille Mae Carlson Evans passed away August 3, 2015, in St. George, Utah. She was born in Palmyra, Utah, June 13, 1920, to Carl A. and Stella Byrne Carlson.

Lucille attended school in Provo, Utah. She was a graduate of the Maeser Grade School, Farrer Jr. High and Provo High School. She met her husband, James Charles Evans (J.C.) growing up in Provo. They were married 65 years. He passed away in 2005.

Lucille was a product of the great depression and learned to “make do” with very little. Her family was her proudest accomplishment. She loved them without reservation and would do anything for them.

Lucille was an excellent seamstress and cook. She loved to crochet and made beautiful afghans for many in her family.

Lucille worked hard for everything she had. She worked alongside J.C. building two beautiful homes. She had excellent taste in decorating and clothing. She was down to earth and yet very intelligent and had an uncanny mechanical ability. It was important to her to remain independent which she did. Living in her own home until she was 94 ½.

Lucille loved her grandchildren and they loved spending time with “Mountain Grandma”. She is survived by her two daughters, DeAnn Burnham (Jeff) of Tucson, Arizona, and Judy Hall (Jon) of St. George; five grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a great grandson, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral Services will be Friday, August 7, at 10 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff, St. George.
  • There will be a viewing Friday, 9-10 a.m., prior to services at the chapel.
  • Interment will take place in the Tonaquint Cemetery.

Dorthy Schmutz Ballard

Dorthy Schmutz Ballard, age 84, passed away August 4, 2015.

She was born October 10, 1930, in St. George, Utah, to Grant and Jessie Terry Schmutz. She grew up in Middleton, Utah, and attended school in Washington and St. George and was attending Woodward High School when she met Darwin Ballard. They were married Sept. 29, 1948 in the St. George LDS Temple.

Throughout their life, they were nearly inseparable. They worked together in raising seven children, in fulfilling church callings, starting and running two businesses and ranching activities. They had many fun times together.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,  serving in many callings. She was released from her most recent calling just last Sunday. A few of her many talents were sewing, bookkeeping, scrapbooking, cooking and gardening, but she excelled and took delight in being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, never forgetting birthdays or anniversaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Darwin, son Scott, stillborn twin boys, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her sisters Shirley (Donald) Larkin and Leona Schmutz; her children Ray (Kari) Ballard, Greg (Sherrie) Ballard, Tony Ballard, Dale (Maralee) Ballard, Ralph (Ruth) Ballard, Debbie (Nic) Blake; 28 grandchildren; and 63 great-grandchildren.

She was always cheerful and a great example to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and will always be remembered.

  • Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 8, 1 p.m. at the chapel located at 655 S. 700 West, Hurricane.
  • A viewing will be Friday, 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. prior to services at the chapel.

Sandra McClanahan

McClanhan, Sandra(August 19, 1941 – August 4, 2015)

Sandra McClanahan passed away on August 4, 2015, after a short hospital stay. She was born on August 19, 1941, in Winslow, Arizona, to Orson LeRoy and Beth (Merrell) Cluff. She was married to Douglas Dean McClanahan in February of 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He passed away in March of 1980.

Sandra had a pretty normal childhood and was raised in Heber, Utah, and Snowflake, Arizona. She lived in Las Vegas, as well as Portland, Oregon, and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. After the death of her husband, she moved back to St. George.

She is survived by one daughter, three grandchildren, one great-grandson, a sister and brother and sister-in-law.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Monday, August 10, at 11 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George.
  • A viewing will be Monday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the mortuary.
  • Interment will take place in the Hurricane City Cemetery.

Kemp, Gene obit(May 10, 1933 – August 8, 2015)

Gene J. Kemp, 82, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2015.  He was born May 10, 1933, to LaVell Kemp and Thelma Alice Ewell in Sandy, Utah.

He served honorably in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Family was the most the important thing to Gene; he loved his children and grandchildren with all of his heart. Spending time with his family brought him great joy.

Gene was well liked by everyone. His sense of humor and laugh made everyone who knew him love him. Gene loved to farm, fish, and travel.

He is survived by his wife Joy of St. George, Utah; son Korey (Mary Ann) of Parowan; son Derek (Lisa) of West Jordan; daughter Andrea Jensen (Brad) of Herriman; daughter Marlene Souza (Marcio) of Las Vegas, 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, two sisters Shana Olson (Kent), Charlotte Jensen (Dennis), and sister-in-law Voris Kemp, plus several step children.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, older brother Norvin, two wives Deanna Eyre, and Marianne Packard, and son William Craig Kemp.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at the LDS Sunset 1st Ward chapel, 82 North Dixie Drive, St. George.
  • A viewing will be Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel, and Saturday, 10-11:30 a.m. at the McGill Ward House, 10 North 4th Street, Ely.
  • Interment will take place in the Ely Cemetery.
