smith-ida-y-obitJanuary 11, 1918 — January 4, 2017

Our sweet mother, grandmother and friend, Felice Smith, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2017, at the age of 98 in St. George, Utah.

Felice was born on January 11, 1918, in El Paso, Texas, to Eli Swain and Ada Mortensen. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

As a young woman, Felice had the opportunity to serve as a missionary in the Northern States Mission, where she was set apart as a member of the Mormon Ladies Sextet. The Sextet performed throughout the Northern States, sharing the gospel through song.

After her mission, Felice attended Brigham Young University where she earned a degree in music and served as the president of the LDS Sorority, Lambda Delta Sigma. It was here that she met her future husband and love of her life, Mayo Wilford Smith. They were married in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple on Aug. 27, 1947.

Mayo and Felice resided in Southern California where Mayo practiced medicine for 40 years. Together they served in the Los Angeles LDS Temple and served as Senior Missionaries in the Dominican Republic after Mayo’s retirement. Felice enjoyed working alongside dear friends in the California Utah Women organization for many years and served as its president from 1981-82.

Felice was a gifted musician. Music filled her life and home. She had the privilege of singing in the Tabernacle Choir and directed choirs throughout her life, serving as the Stake Music Chairman for over 30 years. Her love of music was eclipsed only by her love of her Heavenly Father and her family.

Felice’s love for life and people was evident in all she did. She brought light, love and laughter to all who knew her. She saw the best in everyone and felt that kindness was the hallmark of a life well lived. She had a deep and abiding faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Although she has left us, her legacy lives on as a bright light and a beautiful song. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss singing and dancing with her.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, our beloved mother, VeLois Nielson Carbine, slipped peacefully away at her home in Santa Clara, Utah, surrounded by her daughters.

She was born and raised in Manti, Utah, the fourth daughter and seventh child of John Rudolph Nielson and Alice Johnson Nielson.

VeLois graduated from Manti High School and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, where she became Dean of Women. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in education with a minor in music from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

In Sept. 1954, she married Dennis D. Carbine in the Manti LDS Temple. He whisked her off on adventure after adventure all around this beautiful world. It was the “love of a lifetime” and their honeymoon never ended. After 18 years in Anaheim, California, they retired to Southern Utah where they enjoyed views of the red mountains for the last 20-plus years.

VeLois raised and cherished five daughters. She inspired and taught them to love the gospel, be good homemakers, sing and to have fun in life. She had a deep and powerful testimony of the gospel and served in multiple capacities throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis D. Carbine, her daughter Jennifer, her granddaughter Annie Haggard; her six siblings and her parents.

November 29, 1929 — January 16, 2017

Alene Pendleton Adams, age 87, of St. George, Utah, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many passed away peacefully in her home on Jan. 16, 2017, surrounded by members of her family. Alene was born on Nov. 29, 1929, in Washington, Utah, to Edna and Lorraine Pendleton.

Unlike most babies who are blessed in a church on Sunday, Alene was blessed in the middle of the street at the intersection of 200 East and 200 North in Washington, Utah, on a weekday by a neighbor, Randolf Andrus, who gave her a blessing at the urgent request of her mother. Alene was choking and her mother thought she was going to choke to death. When he asked what the baby’s name was, the only name that came to her mind was “Alene.”  Consequently, she was named and blessed in the street that day. She related this story many times throughout her life to illustrate the power of priesthood blessings and the faith she had in them because when he finished the blessing, her normal breathing resumed.

Alene met David Klein Adams at a dance at the old Rec Hall next to the Tabernacle. He and his brother, Jack, had moved to St. George from Orem to start a tomato farm. It was love at first sight and they were married in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 10, 1947. She was 17 and Klein was 23. They were sealed 30 years later in the St. George LDS Temple on Aug. 24, 1977. Alene wholeheartedly devoted herself to her family from the day she was married and was determined to be the best mother she could be.

When she and Klein went into the mobile home and RV sales business, she found her niche in business and became a top-notch saleswoman. After her four children were married, she and her two daughters, Pennee and Angie, started Boulevard Bridal and Prom and Mr. Tux in the Boulevard West Mall. Alene really enjoyed helping girls choose the perfect prom or wedding dress. She also enjoyed helping young men coordinate their tuxes with accessories that matched the dresses of their dates. She was personable and patient, and everyone liked working with her.

She had many talents, but playing the piano and organ were her two favorite. In the past, she was active in the Lady Lions Club and has served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a primary teacher many times. Alene was quick-witted and liked to make people laugh. Alene had hundreds of clichés her grandmother taught her. She, in turn, taught them to her children and grandchildren; and they have become one of her legacies. “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” was one she used as a guide in her life. She tackled every obstacle with determination and a lot of will power. She usually came out victorious. Conquering death will undoubtedly be viewed by her as the icing on the cake, as she will be reunited with the love of her life. She grieved for 3 long years after his passing.

Alene was preceded in death by her husband, David Klein Adams; her brother, Theo Lytel Pendleton; her mother, Edna Harris; grandparents, Margie and Hyrum Turnbeaugh; and grandsons, Shaun Rickie Adams and Josh Rickie Adams.

She is survived by her four children: Pamela “Pennee” Suesett (Holger) Kirchhausen, Rickie Klein (Cheryl) Adams, Jeffrey David (Elizabeth) Adams, and Angaleza Adams; 16 grandchildren: Heinz (Angie) Kirchhausen, Keesha (Eric) McPherson, Kammee (Jim) Plant, Kynzee (Ryan) Barton, Krizia (Houman) Katoozi, Hans (Amelia) Kirchhausen, Jessica (Derek) McAllister, Jordan (Karlee) Adams, Emily (Casey) Blais, Aaron Adams, Melissa (Wessley) Musso, Christian Adams, Alexia (Cary) Decker, Acacia Adams, Breitton Adams and Angillesa Adams; and 32 precious great-grandchildren.

August 7, 1926 — January 29, 2017

Vernon Woodbury, age 90, was welcomed back home and into the loving arms of family on the evening of Jan. 29, 2017. Vernon was born Aug. 7, 1926, to Grant and Bertha Wheeler Woodbury in Hurricane, Utah.

Vernon spent his youth roaming the countryside of Hurricane, Utah, working alongside his father Grant, raising horses, cattle and dry farming. When he turned 18 he enlisted in the Marines to serve his country during World War II from 1944-1946. With the end of the war, he was honorably discharged. He then decided to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in Minnesota. Once he returned home he started driving truck across the country, where he met Bernice in California. They were married in the St. George LDS Temple on April 23, 1955. They later divorced. He then married Corinne Hansen on May 7, 1994, and they were later sealed in the St. George LDS Temple.

His love for life and others could always be seen in his daily actions. He was able to move his family to the great state of Texas where he attended Steven F Austin University. Graduating with his degree in agriculture he found himself taking on a career working as an Agricultural Extension Specialist. He also worked with the youth in 4-H and in the scouting programs. However, one of his favorite callings in the church was working with the children, especially the little ones in nursery and sunbeams. He was also able to fulfill his love of gardening by serving as the Stake and Ward Gardening Specialist. He had the greenest thumb around. He could make anything grow here in St. George.

He retired early from the extension service and decided to start his own business helping farmers increase the yield of their crops. He had the opportunity to go to Antigua and help the people there with gardening skills and absolutely fell in love with them and would always talk of finding a way to go back. Up to the time that he passed, he was always trying to find a way to get back out there and help farmers with their crops. If you knew him, you would know that this was his life’s passion.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, both his first and second wife, and 2 great-grandchildren. He is survived by a brother, Grant, and also by his children, Chris (Katherine) of Hurricane, Utah, Janice (Steve) of Cedar City, Utah, Mark (Gail) of St George, Utah, Karen (Brian) of Selmer, Tennessee, 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Southern Utah Veterans Home and their staff for the loving and dedicated care they have shown to our father this past year.
