Poole, Don O obit(August 14, 1025 – December 5, 2014)

Donald Ray Poole, Sr., 89, of St. George, Utah, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2014. He was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Sherritts, Ohio, to Oscar Raymond Poole and Edith Evelyn Vermillion Poole.

He was born and raised in Ohio. He met Patricia L. Grubbs in High School at age 15. After graduating from High School, they married on July 8, 1944. They were later sealed in the LDS Temple in Mesa, Arizona. “Patty” passed away Aug. 7, 1993. They had four children together. He later married Ellen Coursey. In 1992, they moved to St. George, Utah, and built a home on St. James Lane. Ellen passed away Jan. 15, 2010. In October 2010, Don was introduced to Janette Hay. He married his wee Scottish wife on October 2, 2010. They were soul mates and best friends from day one!!

Don loved his country! In April of 1943, World War II was in full swing. He felt compelled to go and serve, so at age 17 1/2, he and about 30 other young men, went down to Wright Paterson Field to take an Aviation Cadet Exam. He was only one of three who passed and the only one to choose the Air Force. In August, just after graduating from High School, he was called to Active Duty. Don served his country well. He was stationed at various places all over the United States, as well as abroad — Bermuda and Guam. He was a B29 Navigator, and piloted B25’s, B36’s, B47’s and C47’s. During these years, he was awarded many medals. He was a Hurricane Hunter from 1949-1952, a member of the Strategic Air Command from 1952-1964 and on the Inspector General’s Team from 1959-1964. He retired as an Air Force Major in May of 1964.

Don joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in June of 1958. In 1966, after retiring from the Air Force, he was appointed Manager of Helaman Halls, at Brigham Young University. He worked there for 26 years, before retiring and moving to St. George. While at BYU he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development and Family Relations.

Poole, Don Y obitHe loved to golf and used to make his own clubs. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and barbecuing, and even wrote some poetry here and there. He was smart and in 1943, had a measured I.Q. of 149. He could do math in his head and was a quick learner. He loved sports, whether as a participant or a spectator. He always enjoyed playing basketball, swimming, bowling and billiards.

Don loved his sweet wife and all his posterity more than anything else in life! He was always full of gratitude for all that he had and expressed his love of the Lord daily. He always cried as he talked about Janette and how grateful he was that they had been brought together. As Christie (Janette’s friend) said it so well, “our Lord is so blessed to have Don in His kingdom”.

Don is survived by his wife, Janette Poole of St. George, Utah; Pamela Kay Holt (Larry) of LaJunta, Colorado, Donald Ray Poole Jr. (Paula) of West Jordan, Utah, Tara Ann Chappell (Byron) of St. George, Utah, and Joseph Dean Poole (Marie) of Harbor Island, Bahamas. Dransfield, Howard obit(1930 – December 7, 2014

Howard Eugene Dransfield passed away peacefully on December 7, 2014, due to complications of congestive heart failure.  He was surrounded by his children in his St. George home.  Three months prior he was bereft of his beloved wife of 61 years, Joye Ann.  His children rejoice that their separation was brief.

Howard will be remembered as a man of integrity, work, and service.  His story is one of humble beginnings and of steady progress through industry and discipline.  He worked his entire professional life as a valued employee of Mobil Oil Corporation, beginning in service station operations in Los Angeles, and retiring as General Manager of U.S. Marketing at corporate headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.   Though very busy in his profession, Howard served generously and tirelessly in many leadership positions in the community, and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a bishop and in the stake presidency of the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Stake.  Following his retirement, Howard and Joyce Ann served two full-time missions to South Africa, where they fell in love with the people and the land.

Above all, Howard served his family, which was the great joy of his life.  His children will always remember the way he loved and honored their mother.  This love formed the great stability of their home.  He taught his children the lessons and principles he had learned as a young man:  hard work, commitment to one’s goals, and selfless service.  He also valued fun, and time with his family.  He led his wife and children to exciting places – everywhere from Yosemite to Nantucket – and offered them many memorable and educational experiences.

Howard was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1930, to Albert Dransfield, an immigrant from England, and Pearl Russon, also of English descent.  He served as a full-time LDS missionary to Nottingham, England, and then earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Brigham Young University in business marketing. He married Joye Ann in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1953.  Howard is survived by his six children:  Mark, Holly, David, Nancy, Scott and Eric.

image001 (6)(January 13, 1932 – December 18, 2014)

On December 18, 2014, Thomas Clark Terry was called back to his heavenly home to be reunited with his parents and all five of his brothers and two sisters that preceded him in death.

Thomas Clark Terry was born January 13, 1932, in Enterprise, Utah, in the back bedroom of the family home. He passed away in the front room of that same home.

Thomas was the fifth of 11 children, He grew up in Enterprise and on the Terry Ranch just west of Enterprise working cattle and farming with his father and brothers.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 and spent the next four years serving his country during the Korean War. He served on a sub-tender the “USS Nereus” out of San Diego and Pearl Harbor. As fate would have it, Tom’s best friend in the service was married to a gal that was the best friend of Mom. A blind date was arranged and they spent the next two years as pen pals. At the end of the Korean War, Tom and Phyllis were married in Berkley, Michigan, on May 19, 1955. Tom converted and baptized Mom into the Gospel. While in Michigan, they were blessed with three children: Suellen Kay, Craig Thomas and Allison Gae.

In 1972, the family drove out to Enterprise from Michigan and went through the St. George LDS Temple to be sealed as a family for all eternity. Family and friends from the area were able to be with Dad and support us all.

Dad was known as Thomas in the Navy and Michigan, and in Utah he is and always will be Clark.

The family resided in Michigan until 1978, then moved to Las Vegas, a little closer to home for Dad. In 1990, Dad retired and the family moved again – back to Enterprise for Dad; nearer the beloved Terry Ranch and the brothers and sisters who resided in the area.

Thomas leaves behind his eternal wife, Phyllis; his daughter: Suellen (Loren) Michel; son, Craig (Cindie) Terry; and daughter, Allison (Ken) Renel; six grandchildren: Chris (Lindsey), Keli (John), Clark (Erika), Kyle (Leilani), Summer (Tyler) and Sierra; six great-grandchildren: Taegan, Kadence, Gideon, Evita, Haydon and Logan; sisters: Camilla Brown, Afton Cannon and Elva Singleton; and lots and lots of nieces and nephews that adored their Uncle “Unc” Clark.

VAndenberghe, George OBIT1(March 28, 1921 – December 19, 2014)

George M. Vandenberghe of Cedar City, Utah, age 93, passed away December 19, 2014, at the Southern Utah Veterans home in Ivins, Utah. He was born March 28, 1921, in Los Angeles, California to Maurice Arthur Vandenberghe & Madeleine Martha Donckels Vandenberghe.

George moved from Los Angeles with his parents in 1928 at the age of seven. His family farmed and made their home south of Cedar City in the area now known as Vandenberghe Road.

George attended school in Cedar City where he met his sweetheart of 73 years, Mary Jane Stephensen.  She was attending BAC (SUU) where Dad would take her home after getting milk from the college diary.  The ride looked good to her.

They married January 22, 1942,  in Pioche, Nevada, and lived on the farm for the remainder of their lives.  They lived in a sheep wagon for the first year and built a home  as the family grew.

While farming the land Dad also worked at the Iron mines for 33 years.  He enjoyed loading bullets, hunting deer and rabbits.  He also loved the outdoors, horse back riding, ice skating on Navajo Lake and sledding at Woods Ranch was also a fun activity with his family and friends.

Dad created a legacy that started with five sheep & 20 acres producing hay, corn, wheat, raising cows, sheep and turkeys.  His turkeys were known as the best in the west, raising up to 12,000 turkeys each year.

Dad and Mom followed the Utah Jazz thru their ups and downs, traveling to Salt Lake where they met the Jazz bear, Frank Laden and President Thomas S. Monson.

Dad was known to all who traveled on Vandenberghe Road. Should you be traveling there … BEWARE of a slow moving red Dodge or a John Deer Gator on the wrong side of the road.  He had a great gift of gab and loved sharing his Obama jokes.

George is survived by his sister Joeline (Joe) Perri; his children, William (Bill) Vandenberghe (Maxiene), Regina Lister, Madeleine Shelley (Keith), Marsha Snow, Judy Jenson (David); and nephew Lee Roy Stephensen; 19 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren and his beloved dog Blackie.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane, a daughter Margaret Elizabeth, two brothers Henry and Roger and two sisters, Mary and Betty.
