Roy BrockbankDec. 19, 1944 — May 21, 2016

Dear Family, friends, one and all,

Today I took my last breath of life here in Saint “Scorch,” Utah, in the early morning of Saturday, May 21, 2016. The cause of my passing is incidental to my age and modern life stress. I was born Dec. 19, 1944, to wonderful parents, Byron Andrus Brockbank and Luella Mae Nettles Brockbank in Coeur d ‘Alene, Idaho. I am the youngest of three children. My brother is Vaughn Brockbank, and my sister is Eleanor Hurst.

After my birth, we moved to Orlando, Florida, where I enjoyed a terrific and fun childhood and youth. I graduated from Oakridge High School in 1963. Soon thereafter, I moved west to Utah and California for college and employment on the West Coast. I graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1968. I enjoyed the pursuit of happiness and hard knocks with my first wife, Sandra McCurdy of Orlando, from 1965 to 1970. Then we divorced.

I returned to school and graduated from Utah Technical College in 1976. I began the happiest work years of my life as a plant electrician for FMC Corporation in Green River, Wyoming. It was a wonderful job with great coworkers. I married Deborah Y Thayne on April 8, 1977, in Evanston, Wyoming.

I am succeeded by three wonderful children from that marriage: Cristalle Joy Carey and husband, Aaron, of St. George, Utah; Brandon Joel Brockbank and wife, Timaree, of Salt Lake City; and daughter Candace Caryn Toman of St. George, Utah.

I am also succeeded by six awesome grandchildren: Celina Yvonne Brockbank, Aaron Carey Jr, Felicity Anne Brockbank, Ashlynn Olivia Brockbank, Brooklyn Skjai Toman and Boston Paige Toman.

I most enjoyed spending time with my wonderful family and friends. I also loved spending time in outdoor activities, hiking the Rocky Mountains and traveling. Riding motorcycles was my summer passion. I’ve had a great life, so do not grieve for me. Instead, maybe plant a tree, make a wish or most of all, spend time with your loved ones.

Ciao,

Alan B.

Alan’s family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at The Retreat at Sunbrook, Zion’s Way Hospice, Janice Johnson, and Spilsbury Mortuary for the wonderful care provided for our dad.

Gary SmithDec. 18, 1956 — May 20, 2016

“Smitty,” our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend!

Gary Larson Smith “Smitty” at the age of 59 passed away in his home surrounded by his family on May 20, after succumbing to his illness.

Gary was born on Dec. 18, 1956, in Panguitch, Utah, to Dar and Helen (Jolley) Smith of Tropic, Utah.

Gary moved to beautiful St. George in 1967 where he graduated from Dixie High School Class of ’75 with the reputation of being the guy that everyone knew and loved! His love of life, friends and music endeared him to many.

Gary worked at Mont’s Texaco on the Boulevard for years. His first love was his little blue Ford courier pickup, and this was a gateway love that facilitated him to chase beautiful women. He married early and often. “One at a time of course.”

But, seriously, Smitty worked hard, he became a father earlier in life, and his love for his family and his love and desire to provide for them created one hard working guy. He was one of the hardest working men you’d ever meet! He worked very hard throughout his lifetime at many jobs over the years, but none could compare to his true calling in life as a heavy equipment operator! He loved the work of moving dirt.

He poured his blood, sweat and tears into his work! If you know Smitty, you know he always had the most amazing tan from working in that hot Dixie sun, but he loved it. He earned a prestigious reputation of being one of the best heavy equipment operators in town (just ask anyone, and they’ll tell you)!

In the early ’80s, he bought his home in Washington City, Utah. He raised his daughter Keena there, one day to surprise her with announcement of the arrival of her new baby brother, Chase. In later years, Smitty’s family grew again. He met and then married his wife Brenda in October of 1993 in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s where he gained three more beautiful children: Cristy, Jessica and Kimberly.

Smitty considered it an honor to have his grandchildren grow up in or around that same home!

Even though Smitty’s life has ended here on this mortal earth, we leave you knowing this: Smitty’s life does not end here. I’m sure there is some dirt work in heaven that needed to be done!

Sadly, he leaves behind Dar and Helen, his loving mother and father; wife, Brenda Smith; children Keena Smith Tanner (Darin) and Chase Smith; stepchildren Cristy Marie Chadd, Jessica Ann Gomez, Kimberly Dawn Nixon and Diane Trujillo; siblings Larry, Dar, Tim, Lans and Kristin Smith; and grandchildren Mykala, Michelle, Melissa, Dillon, Roger, Aviona and Dakota.

Gary was preceded in death by his infant brother, David, and his grandparents.

“Oh yeah he loved his strawberry milk shakes too!!”

Garry MartinDec. 30, 1938 — May 21, 2016

Garry William Martin, 77, of Washington, Utah, passed away on Saturday, May 21, after a nine-month struggle with cancer and then hospice. He was a true, loving family man, and he also loved nature and the outdoors.

Garry was born in Preston, Idaho, on Dec. 30, 1938, to parents Clyde and Lucile Beckstead Martin. His family, including sisters Clydene and LuDawn, moved to Pasadena, California, in the spring of 1941 when he was 3 years old.  His youngest sibling, Jim, was born there in 1946.

Garry graduated from John Muir High School in 1956 in Pasadena, California.  He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Arkansas and Missouri and then pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and an MBA from Cal-State University at L.A., graduating with honors and later receiving his CPA license. Garry was a veteran, having served active and reserve duty with the 63rd Army Reserve at Fort Ord and Bell, California.

Garry was married for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles temple to wife Deanna Shirley Peak on Nov. 10, 1962. While pursuing his degrees and starting a family, he worked for the United California Bank in Pasadena, Lincoln Heights, and Hollywood. After college, Garry worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office in L.A., traveling for audits in the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America.

Garry and Deanna raised four children: Jim, Jennifer, Jay, and Josh. Around Thanksgiving 1975, he moved his family to Boise, Idaho, for what he found was an outstanding place to raise a family and also to get back to his birth state. He worked for Boise Cascade Corporation for ten years as an Internal Auditor/CPA and also a Division Controller. The mid-1980’s brought downsizing at Boise Cascade Corp., so Garry returned to his government roots as an auditor in Diamond Bar, California, and Crystal City, Virginia. He ended his professional career working as CFO for the Dallas VA Hospital in Texas.

Garry and Deanna retired to the St. George, Utah, area around 2004 to be near his mother, father and brother’s family. There they found many great friends over the years. After 50 years of marriage, his sweet wife Deanna passed in 2013 due to her own struggles with cancer and also depression. His love, patience and understanding were instrumental throughout much of Deanna’s adult life.Garry Martin younger

Garry welcomed a new miracle from the past back into his life when he married Beverly Jean Funk Stine in the San Diego temple July 20, 2013.  Beverly was a former girlfriend of Garry’s in the late 1950’s and had recently lost her own husband, Jan Stine of nearly 50 years to cancer.  Her love and help was invaluable to each of them and their families.

Garry was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Lucile; sister LuDawn; and wife Deanna.

He is survived by his wife Beverly and the Stine family; children Jim and Tammy Wolf Martin, Jennifer Martin Eliason and Dr. Steve Eliason, Jay and Cristy Trocosso Martin, Josh and Amy Ouzts Martin; sister Clydene Martin Potruch; and brother Jim and wife Jacquie, as well as 15 loving grandchildren; Cole, Jake, Trent, Avery, Charlie, Shannon, Julie, Rebecca, Shelly, Brian, Jenny, Jamie, Madison, Tyler and Blake.

Funeral Services

  • Garry’s funeral will be held at the Buena Vista Stake Center on Fairway Drive in Washington, Utah, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, with a viewing to be held shortly before.

Thanks to all those who helped Garry call this a sort of “graduation, and mission accomplished!” His family wishes to thank Beverly and the wonderful Stine family for their love and care, his favorite (only) brother Jim and wife Jacquie, his sister Clydene Martin Potruch, his Ward and Stake family — especially home teacher Kent — and former Bishop Wilson, friends and family near and far, and also the kind and generous doctors, nurses and caregivers who helped him through so much.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Spilsbury Mortuary, 435-635-2212.
