September 14, 1929 — November 16, 2016
Donald Alva Best, age 87, graduated from this earthly existence on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family. Born to Benjamin Alva “Bob” Best and Elsie Long Best at home in St. George, Utah, on Sept. 14, 1929, the youngest of two siblings. Raised on a farm in Price Bench, now Bloomington Ranches.
He graduated from Dixie High School and attended Dixie Jr. College. Drafted into the U.S. Army at the end of World War II, he served in Germany. He worked as a laborer, carpenter, St. George City police officer and 25 years on the Highway Patrol. He retired from the Utah National Guard as a Master Sergeant and from the Highway Patrol.
He is survived by Carrol Winsor Best, his wife of 64 years; six children, Alva Kirk (Melody) Best, Sherrie Jean (Larry) Jones, DonnaVee Holt, Robert Max Best, Ronald Tim (Gia) Best and Maria DeAnn (Craig) Norush; 24 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, LanaKay Best; grandson Robert Samuel Best and sister Lorraine Adams.
He believed in productive work and family. He had a charitable character and many friends.
We appreciate Dixie Home Hospice for their professional care and patience, and the Ivins 6th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their compassionate service.
Funeral services
- Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at 11 a.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff, St. George, Utah.
- Viewings will be Sunday evening from 5-7 p.m. in the Mortuary and on Monday, Nov. 21, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Mortuary, prior to services.
- Interment will take place in the Ivins City Cemetery.
