Oct. 11, 1945-June 22, 2023
Pauline Rose Shults, our wonderful and deeply loved mother, grandmother and sister, returned to her Heavenly Father peacefully the night of June 22, 2023. Although we will miss her terribly, we know that she is having a joyful reunion with her loving husband Duane, as well as her many family members who have gone on before.
Pauline was born on Oct. 11, 1945, in Provo, Utah, to Paul A. Luster and Pauline Patrica Paulitz Luster. In 1965, she fell in love at first sight with Duane Shults when she entered his motorcycle shop in Salt Lake City. They were married soon after and were together until his death in 2003. She and Duane lived in Texas, Provo, and Salt Lake City, Utah, before eventually settling in St. George, Utah, where they owned and operated a motorcycle shop. Pauline had an adventurous life, working at Bryce Canyon National Park, hitchhiking to Georgia, traveling to Japan, New Zealand, Italy, England, Scotland and Alaska and riding motorcycles. Pauline worked for the city of St. George for 22 years as Utah’s first female meter reader. She was adored by her friends and co-workers in the power department.
Known in some circles as “the Finisher,” Pauline was an extremely talented artisan and seamstress who created beautiful clothing and crafts of all kinds, but quilting was her passion. For years, she and a group of her dear friends met regularly to spend the day socializing while they created many beautiful quilts together. Every year Pauline donated as many as 80 (often more) of her handmade quilts to various charities, including Millcreek High School, the Dove Center, the senior center and anyone in need. She dearly loved her quilting buddies who became lifelong friends. Eventually, she learned to “quilt as you go,” using her regular machine, which helped to speed up the process of making even more quilts in a shorter time. All her creations were hand-cut and pieced. Her sewing mantra was “a day without sewing was a day unfulfilled.”
She was a kind, industrious, creative, generous, hilarious person who found joy in helping others. She taught her children, “If you can help, you should help.” She adored her children, grandchildren and extended family members and served them well. Pauline is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and practiced the teachings of her Savior daily.
Pauline is survived by her children: Jolynn Shults (Jon) of San Bernardo, J.R. Shults (Jessica) of St. George, Colorado; Susie Love House (Colton) of Pleasant Grove, Utah; Stepson, Scott Hughes of Las Vegas; her grandsons Hayden, Nolan and Truett Shults; brother Marvin Wayne (Diane) Luster of Spanish Fork, Utah; sister Sherry Kay Riedelbach of Rexburg, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Duane J. Shults, parents Paul and Pauline Luster, brother William David Luster, sister Toni Janine Jenkins, brothers-in-law Kelley Jenkins and Ernest Riedelbach, niece Wendy Johnson and great-nephew Tyler Johnson.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 10 a.m., at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 South Bluff St., St. George, Utah, followed by the funeral services starting at 11 a.m.
Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George, Utah.
