(April 24, 1923 – May 12, 2015)
Don Sanders Squire, 92, passed away May 12, 2015, in St. George, Utah. He was born April 24, 1923, in LaVerkin, Utah, to Loren DeLance Squire and Amelia Sanders Squire. He married Dixie DeMille in the St. George Utah Temple on November 14, 1953.
He grew up in LaVerkin, Utah, graduated from Hurricane High School, and received an Associates Degree from Dixie College in St. George, Utah. He was inducted into the Army, April 11, 1943, during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded two Bronze stars. He began his career with the National Park Service as a seasonal ranger in Zion and Bryce National Parks. He then briefly worked as an officer for the Provo Police Department before embarking on his life’s profession with the National Park Service. He worked at Lake Mead NRA, Nevada; Yosemite National Park, and Lassen National Park, California; and finished his career as superintendent of Walnut Canyon National Monument outside of Flagstaff, Arizona, retiring in 1980.
Upon retirement he moved back home to LaVerkin. To occupy his free time he worked at Shamo Lumber Co., Graff Mercantile, Hurricane Electronics Lab, and with St. George Ford/Lincoln Mercury shuttling cars. Shortly after retiring, he lost his beloved wife of 30 years, Dixie, in 1984.
He loved hunting, fishing and shooting, especially with his brothers. He was a member of the Lions’ Club, American Legion, and because of his love of his cars, he was a member of local car clubs, i.e. Kruisin’ Knights and Canyon Cruisers. He loved attending and entering car shows with his restored vintage Chevy pickup and his Mustang convertible and was proud of his numerous trophies. He enjoyed traveling and touring places like Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Hawaii.
He always had strong opinions on political and social issues. He lived life to the fullest! He had a fun-loving, adventurous, and humorous personality (a bit of a prankster at times). He served faithfully in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life, serving as high councilor, counselor in the bishopric, Sunday School presidency, and numerous other positions. He was a great fan and huge supporter of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his three children, Devin (Robin) Squire, Phoenix, Arizona; Diane (Bart) Merrill, Enterprise, Utah; and Dayna (Richard) Leavitt, Hurricane, Utah; and 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Adrien and Duwayne in Bountiful, Utah and Scott, Orem, Utah; two sisters, Lorene Turner, Las Vegas, Nevada and Sandra Howard, Leeds, Utah. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dixie, and three brothers, DeLance, Phil, and Jerald.
