Don LaMar Healey, age 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sept. 2, 2022. He was born March 20, 1927, in Alpine, Utah, to Lawrence LaMar Healey and Emily Clara Cullimore. He married Betty Lou Ferguson on Sept. 14, 1950.
Don grew up in the Highland area in Utah. While still a senior in high school, he enlisted in the Navy and was actually in boot camp in San Diego, California, on his high school graduation day. He served in the Navy during World War II and spent most of his three years of service in Guam.
After returning home after the war, Don enrolled at USAC which is now Utah State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Geology. During his years in Logan, he met and married Betty Lou Ferguson in the Logan, Utah, Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 1953, Don was hired by the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey in the Salt Lake City office. One of the biggest projects he worked on was searching for deposits of uranium ore in Monument Valley of Utah and Arizona, living out of a government trailer for about two years. In 1955, Don transferred from SLC to Denver, Colorado, where he and his family lived for the rest of his career. He spent a lot of time doing gravity surveys at the Nevada Test Site and the Aleutian Islands.
In 1992, Don and Betty served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canada, Alberta Mission. He was called to be a sealer in the Denver Temple on Sept. 17, 1989. He worked as a sealer for 30 years, serving in both the Denver and the St. George temples.
In 2002, Don and Betty sold their home in Denver and moved to St. George, Utah, where Don lived until his death.
Don and Betty had four children: Kathleen, Jacquelyn, Douglas Don and Kimberle Lou. Don and Betty also had a foster son Gary Johnson, who lived with them for two years. At the time of his death, he had 20 grandchildren, and 48 great-grandchildren. He loved reading, rock and coin collecting, solving crossword puzzles, hunting and fishing, working with the Scouts and especially working as a Sealer in the temple. He was so loved and will be missed by all.
Don is survived by his two younger brothers Lynn and LeEarl, his four children and foster son.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sunset 10th Ward, 820 N. Valley View Drive, St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held prior to services from 9-10 a.m., also located at the Sunset 10th Ward building. The interment will take place at Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 S. Dixie Drive, St. George, Utah.
